We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Part-Time Hospital Pharmacist to join our team for a temporary role. The ideal candidate will ensure the accurate dispensing of medications, maintain inventory, and comply with all federal and state pharmacy regulations. The role also includes participation in quality assurance programs and direct involvement with patient care through clinical consultations and medication education.

Location: Des Moines, IA
Position: Part-Time Hospital Pharmacist
Hours: 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Duration: 8-10 Weeks

Key Responsibilities:

  • Pharmacy Operations:

  • Maintain adequate drug supply and order appropriate quantities in a timely manner.
  • Procure medications and manage emergency procurement as needed.
  • Complete annual inventory process and forward results to the Business Office.
  • Ensure compliance with all Federal and State Pharmacy laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Oversee the removal and return of outdated medications.
  • Maintain an available stock of emergency drugs and antidotes.
  • Participate in the development and updating of the hospital formulary/drug list.
  • Medication Dispensing & Recordkeeping:

  • Accurately fill and dispense all medications, including stat orders and unit dose charts.
  • Ensure strict control and accountability of all dispensed drugs.
  • Maintain accurate records of all pharmacy transactions as required by law.
  • Inform patients about post-discharge medications and provide written materials for medication education.
  • Manage medication reconciliation for discharge medication lists.
  • Clinical Responsibilities:

  • Monitor drug therapy regimens for contraindications, interactions, allergies, and appropriateness.
  • Detect and report adverse drug reactions.
  • Provide clinical consultations and support for the pharmacy’s Econotherapeutic efforts.
  • Participate in patient drug therapy monitoring, ensuring the safe and effective use of medications.
  • Quality Assurance & Collaboration:

  • Participate in quality assurance programs related to drug utilization and effectiveness.
  • Support the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee and implement committee decisions.
  • Participate in medication use reviews and document relevant activities.
  • Workplace Behavior & Team Engagement:

  • Serve as a role model and resource for staff, promoting positive interdepartmental relationships.
  • Accept responsibility for accreditation support through JCAHO.
  • Encourage continuous quality improvement and empower employees to make decisions.
  • Provide timely counseling and evaluation of staff performance.

    Qualifications:

  • Pharmacy degree (PharmD or equivalent).
  • IA license, required 
  • Inpatient experience, required 
  • Experience with EPIC and medication reconciliation for discharge medication lists.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmacy laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
